IN THIS CONTEXT MICROBIOLOGY IS USED TO DENOTE ANY STUDIES INVOLVING BACTERIA, FUNGI, MICRO-ALGAE, PROTOZOA, SLIME MOULDS, VIRUSES, OR CELLS OR HIGHER ORGANISMS GROWN IN CULTURE, AND THE APPLICATION OF THESE STUDIES IN SOCIETY, INDUSTRY AND THE ENVIRONMENT.
