TO ADVANCE IN LIFE AND RELIEVE THE NEEDS OF D/DEAF CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE UP TO THE AGE OF 19 LIVING IN CHESHIRE, HALTON AND WARRINGTON, CODA’S (CHILDREN OF DEAF ADULTS), HEARING FAMILY MEMBERS, FRIENDS AND PEERS THROUGH: (A) THE PROVISION OF RECREATIONAL AND LEISURE TIME ACTIVITIES PROVIDED IN THE INTEREST OF SOCIAL WELFARE, DESIGNED TO IMPROVE THEIR CONDITIONS OF LIFE; AND (B) PROVIDING SUPPORT AND ACTIVITIES WHICH DEVELOP THEIR SKILLS, CAPACITIES AND CAPABILITIES TO ENABLE THEM TO PARTICIPATE IN SOCIETY AS MATURE AND RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUALS. IN THIS CLAUSE, THE WORD “DEAF” (WITH A CAPITAL D) IS USED TO DESCRIBE AN INDIVIDUAL WHOSE FIRST OR PREFERRED METHOD OF COMMUNICATION IS BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE (BSL), WHILE THE TERM D/DEAF – NOW WIDELY RECOGNISED BY CARE SERVICE PROFESSIONALS – REFERS TO EVERYONE WITH A HEARING LOSS: DEAF, DEAF, DEAFBLIND, HARD-OF-HEARING AND DEAFBLIND PEOPLE.
