THE OBJECT OF THE CHARITY IS, FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT, TO ADVANCE THE EDUCATION OF THE PUBLIC, IN PARTICULAR, BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY, BY THE PROVISION AND MAINTENANCE OF A LIBRARY AND MUSEUM IN PERPETUITY IN AMBLESIDE, CUMBRIA FOR PROMOTING THE STUDY AND GENERAL KNOWLEDGE OF ALL LITERARY, SCIENTIFIC AND ARTISTIC SUBJECTS, WORKS AND ARTEFACTS AND IN PARTICULAR (BUT WITHOUT LIMITATION) THOSE OF THE ARMITT COLLECTION.
