Founded in 1837, the Society's purpose is to promote knowledge of, and research, education and conservation relating to, the earth sciences, especially relating to Yorkshire and the north of England, through lecture and field meetings, publications including "Proceedings", "Circular". field guides. it also cooperates with related societies in its meetings and the annual Yorkshire Geology Month.

TO PROMOTE AND RECORD THE RESULTS OF RESEARCH IN GEOLOGY AND ITS ALLIED SCIENCES, MORE ESPECIALLY IN YORKSHIRE, BY HOLDING MEETINGS FOR THE READING OF ORIGINAL PAPERS AND THE DELIVERY OF PUBLIC LECTURES AND BY FIELD MEETINGS; TO EXTEND KNOWLEDGE OF THE SCIENCE BY DEMONSTRATION AND PUBLICATION, BY THE FORMATION OF A LIBRARY AND SUCH OTHER MEANS AS THE COUNCIL MAY FROM TIME TO TIME DETERMINE.
