Charitable expenditure
Some charities generate all, or a substantial part, of their income from investments which may have been donated to the charity as endowment or set aside by the charity from its own resources in the past. Such investments usually take the form of stocks and shares but may include other assets, such as property, that are capable of generating income and/or capital growth.
In managing their spending and investments charities need to strike a balance between the needs of future and current beneficiaries. They also need to take account of spending commitments that may stretch over a number of future years. To do this, charities will normally adopt an investment strategy designed to generate both income and capital growth. To maximise returns trustees may commit to investment strategies for several years.
Investments can experience large swings in value so trustees may, in a particular year, decide to realise and spend part of their charity’s capital or to invest part of its income.

Charitable objects
4.0 OBJECTS 4.1 THE CHARITY'S EXCLUSIVELY CHARITABLE OBJECTS ARE SPECIFICALLY RESTRICTED TO THE FOLLOWING: 4.1.1 THE PROMOTION OF THE VOLUNTARY SECTOR FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PUBLIC, BY: (A) MAKING BEST PRACTICE IN CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY EASILY ACCESSIBLE TO COMPANIES THROUGH PEER-TO-PEER KNOWLEDGE SHARING IN ORDER TO EFFECTIVELY PROMOTE ETHICAL STANDARDS AND INCREASE POSITIVE IMPACT ON COMMUNITIES AND THE ENVIRONMENT; AND (B) THE PROMOTION OF THE VOLUNTARY SECTOR FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PUBLIC BY PROMOTING CHARITABLE GIVING BY COMPANIES AND ORGANISATIONS AND ENCOURAGING INDIVIDUALS TO PARTICIPATE IN VOLUNTARY WORK, PROVIDING EDUCATION AND TRAINING ON SUBJECTS RELEVANT TO THE EFFICIENCY OF THE VOLUNTARY SECTOR AND ASSISTING IN THE PROVISION OF FINANCIAL, TECHNICAL AND OTHER RESOURCES TO THE VOLUNTARY SECTOR; 4.1.2 SUCH OTHER CHARITABLE OBJECTS AS THE DIRECTORS SHALL CONSIDER APPROPRIATE. 4.2 THE CHARITY SHALL FURTHER THE ABOVE OBJECTS EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PUBLIC IN THE UNITED KINGDOM AND ELSEWHERE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE LAW OF CHARITY OF ENGLAND AND WALES. 4.3 FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS CLAUSE, "THE VOLUNTARY SECTOR" MEANS CHARITIES AND VOLUNTARY ORGANISATIONS.
