1. THE PROMOTION OF SCIENCE AND ADVANCEMENT OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN AFRICA FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT BY: - SUPPORTING AND GROWING RESEARCH CAPACITY AND IN PARTICULAR USING THE FRUIT FLY DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER AS A RESEARCH MODEL (WHERE DROSOPHILA HAS AN ENORMOUS POTENTIAL FOR AFRICAN BIOMEDICAL STUDIES AS A POWERFUL SYSTEM FOR MODELLING HUMAN DISEASES AND INSECT-TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS WHICH ALSO ALLOWS FOR RAPID, CHEAP AND THOROUGH SCREEN OF DRUGS, PLANT EXTRACTS AND OTHER COMPOUNDS IN THE SEARCH FOR DISEASE TREATMENTS); - ESTABLISHING A HIGHLY SKILLED AND MOTIVATED COMMUNITY OF SCIENTISTS DOING BASIC RESEARCH AND MAINTAINING A WELL-CONNECTED COMMUNITY OF RESEARCHERS WORKING WITH DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER IN AFRICA; - CREATING AN INTERNATIONAL AFRICAN NETWORK OF RESEARCHERS AND TEACHERS INTEGRATED IN THE GLOBAL COMMUNITY OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENTISTS; - BUILDING CAPACITY IN AFRICAN UNIVERSITIES AND SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTIONS BY HELPING THESE INSTITUTIONS TO ACCESS AFFORDABLE INTELLECTUAL AND MATERIAL RESOURCES; 2. TO ADVANCE THE EDUCATION OF THE PUBLIC IN GENERAL (AND PARTICULARLY AMONGST SCIENTISTS) IN THE TOPICS OF GENETICS AND HEALTH INCLUDING BY PROMOTING LOCAL RESEARCH IN ALL ASPECTS OF GENETICS AND HEALTH AND DISSEMINATING THE USEFUL RESULTS OF THAT RESEARCH. 3. THE ADVANCEMENT OF HEALTH AND RELIEF OF SICKNESS IN AFRICA FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT BY THE PROMOTION OF APPLIED SCIENCE USING DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER AS A MODEL TO STUDY LOCALLY RELEVANT DISEASES.
