THE OBJECTS OF THE CIO ARE: 1. THE ADVANCEMENT OF THE EDUCATION OF THE PUBLIC IN THE SUBJECT OF GLOBAL VOLCANIC HAZARDS AND HOW TO MONITOR AND PREPARE FOR THEM, IN PARTICULAR BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY BY: A) CONVENING INFORMATIVE WORKSHOPS AND SCENARIO EXERCISES FOR POLICYMAKERS AND INTERNATIONAL ORGANISATIONS B) PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, RESOURCES, AND TRAINING TO ENHANCE KNOWLEDGE AND PREPAREDNESS FOR VOLCANIC EVENTS AMONG INSTITUTIONS AND THE PUBLIC C) CONDUCTING AND SUPPORTING RESEARCH INTO VOLCANIC HAZARDS, THEIR IMPACTS, AND RISK MITIGATION STRATEGIES IN COLLABORATION WITH THE ACADEMIC COMMUNITY AND DISSEMINATING THE USEFUL RESULTS OF SUCH RESEARCH FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT. 2. TO PROMOTE THE SAFETY OF THE PUBLIC BY: A) MONITORING VOLCANIC HAZARDS, UNDERTAKING RESEARCH IN THEM AND DISSEMINATING USEFUL RESULTS IN ORDER TO PREPARE FOR AND MITIGATE AGAINST THE CONSEQUENCES OF VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS B) ADVOCATING FOR OR SUPPORTING MITIGATING ACTIONS, POLICIES AND PRACTICES THAT REDUCE THE RISK AND ENHANCE THE RESILIENCE OF VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES TO VOLCANIC HAZARDS AND BETTER PROTECT POPULATIONS AGAINST THE CONSEQUENCES OF VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS’ C) DEVELOPING AND DISSEMINATING GRANTS FOR EQUIPMENT, EARLY WARNING SYSTEMS, AND RISK ASSESSMENT TOOLS TO THOSE AT RISK FROM VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS.
