The Institution was established for the cultivation of knowledge in medicine, surgery and the collateral branches of science, together with the maintenance of a library. The Institution was established as an association in 1770 and incorporated under a Royal Charter dated 23 June 1964. The principle activities are the library, lectures and meetings for members and conference activity.
