Founded in 1894, originally the purpose was to provide charitable assistance to the poor and needy. It changed to residential care for elderly women some years ago and then men were admitted. In 1st April 2003 the charity passed the management of the home to St Martins Residential Care Ltd. and in April 2012 to The Southend on Sea Darby & Joan Organisation Ltd.
