Some charities generate all, or a substantial part, of their income from investments which may have been donated to the charity as endowment or set aside by the charity from its own resources in the past. Such investments usually take the form of stocks and shares but may include other assets, such as property, that are capable of generating income and/or capital growth.
In managing their spending and investments charities need to strike a balance between the needs of future and current beneficiaries. They also need to take account of spending commitments that may stretch over a number of future years. To do this, charities will normally adopt an investment strategy designed to generate both income and capital growth. To maximise returns trustees may commit to investment strategies for several years.
Investments can experience large swings in value so trustees may, in a particular year, decide to realise and spend part of their charity’s capital or to invest part of its income.

Charitable objects
A. THE MAIN OBJECT OF THE TRUST IS TO PROVIDE OR TO ASSIST IN PROVIDING FACILITIES FOR SPORT, RECREATION, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, TRAINING OR OTHER LEISURE TIME OCCUPATION IN THE LONDON BOROUGH OF REDBRIDGE AND ITS SURROUNDS OR ELSEWHERE, SUCH FACILITIES BEING PROVIDED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE FOLLOWING SUB-PARAGRAPHS OF THIS SUB-CLAUSE, NAMELY:- (I) THE FACILITIES TO BE PROVIDED SHALL BE FACILITIES AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC AT LARGE SAVE THAT SPECIAL FACILITIES MAY BE PROVIDED FOR PERSONS WHO BY REASON OF THEIR YOUTH, AGE, INFIRMITY OR DISABLEMENT, POVERTY OR SOCIAL OR ECONOMIC CIRCUMSTANCES MAY HAVE NEED OF SPECIAL FACILITIES. (II) WHILE THE PERSONS FOR WHOM THE FACILITIES ARE PRIMARILY INTENDED ARE THE COMMUNITY OF REDBRIDGE AND ITS SURROUNDS OR, WHERE OTHER FACILITIES MAY BE ESTABLISHED ELSEWHERE, THE COMMUNITIES IN WHICH THESE OTHER FACILITIES ARE ESTABLISHED, THE USE OF SUCH FACILITIES MAY BE EXTENDED TO OTHER MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC WHO DESIRE TO AND CAN MAKE USE OF THEM. (III) IN THIS SUB-CLAUSE, THE EXPRESSION PROVIDING FACILITIES INCLUDES NOT ONLY THE PROVISION OF LAND, BUILDINGS, EQUIPMENT AND OTHER PHYSICAL FACILITIES BUT ALSO THE ORGANISATION OF SPORTING, RECREATIONAL, PHYSICAL, EDUCATIONAL, TRAINING AND OTHER LEISURE TIME ACTIVITIES FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PUBLIC AT LARGE OR (WHERE REQUIRED) OF THE SPECIAL CLASSES OF PERSONS MENTIONED IN SUB-PARAGRAPH (I) OF THIS SUB-CLAUSE. (IV) IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THIS CLAUSE IT SHALL BE DEEMED AN OVERRIDING PRINCIPLE THAT THE ACTIVITIES TO BE UNDERTAKEN SHALL BE SUCH AS WILL FURTHER THE SOCIAL WELFARE OF THE COMMUNITY OF REDBRIDGE AND ITS NEIGHBOURHOOD OR OF OTHER SUCH COMMUNITIES IN WHICH THE TRUST MAY BE OPERATING.
