The aim of the Institution is to promote, in the Bath and North East Somerset area, an interest in the arts and sciences, and to provide, through archives and collections, resources for education, research and enjoyment. This is aided by the provision of a variety of exhibitions and a diverse programme of lectures, discussions and meetings.

Charitable objects
(1) (I)THE OBJECT OF THE CHARITY IS THE PROMOTION AND ADVANCEMENT, FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT, OF SCIENCE, LITERATURE AND ART IN THE CITY OF BATH AND ITS SURROUNDING AREAS BY SUCH MEANS AS THE TRUSTEE THINKS FIT, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO: A) THE PROVISION AND MAINTENANCE OF A MUSEUM IN OR NEAR THE CITY OF BATH FOR THE DISPLAY OF EXHIBITS OF HISTORICAL, SCIENTIFIC, LITERARY OR ARTISTIC SIGNIFICANCE OR INTEREST; B) THE PROVISION OF A LIBRARY, LECTURES AND OTHER FACILITIES FOR EDUCATION RELATING TO LITERATURE, SCIENCE AND ART; AND C) THE PROMOTION OF RESEARCH RELATING TO LITERATURE, SCIENCE AND ART AND THE PUBLICATION OF THE USEFUL RESULTS OF THAT RESEARCH. (II) IF AND IN SO FAR AS THE CHARITY’S ITEMS AND EXHIBITS ARE NOT IMMEDIATELY REQUIRED FOR THE OBJECT IN SUB-CLAUSE (I) ABOVE, THE TRUSTEE MAY ADVANCE SCIENCE, LITERATURE AND ART ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD BY LENDING ITEMS AND CURATING TRAVELLING EXHIBITIONS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE TERMS SPECIFIED IN CLAUSE 8.
