Some charities generate all, or a substantial part, of their income from investments which may have been donated to the charity as endowment or set aside by the charity from its own resources in the past. Such investments usually take the form of stocks and shares but may include other assets, such as property, that are capable of generating income and/or capital growth.
In managing their spending and investments charities need to strike a balance between the needs of future and current beneficiaries. They also need to take account of spending commitments that may stretch over a number of future years. To do this, charities will normally adopt an investment strategy designed to generate both income and capital growth. To maximise returns trustees may commit to investment strategies for several years.
Investments can experience large swings in value so trustees may, in a particular year, decide to realise and spend part of their charity’s capital or to invest part of its income.

Charitable objects
3. The objects for which the Company is established are:- a) To provide specialist therapeutic services to meet the social, emotional and educational needs of emotionally troubled and traumatised children, young persons, adults, and their families and wider communities; b) Maintain a school under the name or style of ?The Mulberry Bush? at Standlake in the County of Oxford as established by Barbara Estelle Dockar-Drysdale, and/or elsewhere in England and Wales, conducting the same in such a manner that any such school shall be eligible for approval as a Residential Special School within the meaning of the Education Act 1993 or any statutory re- enactment or modification thereof for the time being in force; c) To contribute to the development of new and existing services for children, young persons, adults, and their families and communities with such needs; d) To advance the education of both the public and fellow professionals in the subject of specialist therapeutic services to meet the social, emotional and educational needs of emotionally troubled and traumatised children, young persons, adults, and their families and wider communities by supporting research, investigations, publish research materials, host seminars and facilitate the training of workers.
