The aims of the society are to advance the education of the public in the life, works and times of Dr Samuel Johnson and to assist in the preservation, maintenance, repair, restoration and enhancement of the contents of the freehold property on the corner of Market Street, Lichfield, Staffs (known as Dr Johnson's Birthplace) as a place of historical interest for the public benefit.

TO ADVANCE THE EDUCATION OF THE PUBLIC IN THE LIFE, WORKS AND TIMES OF DR. SAMUEL JOHNSON BY 1. ENCOURAGING INTEREST IN, AND STUDY OF, THE WRITINGS, LIFE AND TIMES OF SAMUEL JOHNSON 2. SUPPORTING THE SAMUEL BIRTHPLACE MUSEUM BY HELPING TO MAINTAIN AND ENHANCE ITS CONTENTS, AND BY WORKING WITH THE JOHNSON BIRTHPLACE ADVISORY COMMITTEE 3. ASSISTING IN PRESERVING OTHER PHYSICAL MEMORIALS OF JOHNSON AND HIS CONTEMPORARIES, INCLUDING BOOKS, MANUSCRIPTS, ARTEFACTS, BUILDINGS, STATUES AND JOHNSON'S WILLOW 4. PARTICIPATE IN THE ANNUAL COMMEMORATIONS OF JOHNSON'S BIRTHDAY PROMOTE KNOWLEDGE OF EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY HISTORY IN GENERAL.
