Charitable expenditure
Some charities generate all, or a substantial part, of their income from investments which may have been donated to the charity as endowment or set aside by the charity from its own resources in the past. Such investments usually take the form of stocks and shares but may include other assets, such as property, that are capable of generating income and/or capital growth.
In managing their spending and investments charities need to strike a balance between the needs of future and current beneficiaries. They also need to take account of spending commitments that may stretch over a number of future years. To do this, charities will normally adopt an investment strategy designed to generate both income and capital growth. To maximise returns trustees may commit to investment strategies for several years.
Investments can experience large swings in value so trustees may, in a particular year, decide to realise and spend part of their charity’s capital or to invest part of its income.

Charitable objects
TO PROMOTE THE PRESERVATION AND PROTECTION OF MENTAL HEALTH, TO ADVANCE EDUCATION AND TO RELIEVE PERSONS SUFFERING FROM PSYCHOLOGICAL OR EMOTIONAL ILLNESS BY: (1) EDUCATING, TRAINING, QUALIFYING, SETTING STANDARDS OF PRACTICE FOR AND SUPPORTING PSYCHOTHERAPISTS AND COUNSELLORS THROUGH THE PROVISION OF COURSES, CLASSES, SEMINARS WORKSHOPS AND CONFERENCES ON THE SUBJECT OF PSYCHOTHERAPY AND COUNSELLING AND THROUGH THE PROMOTION OF AN ASSOCIATION OF STUDENTS, TRAINEES, PSYCHOTHERAPISTS AND COUNSELLORS; (2) PROVIDING COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY FOR THOSE SUFFERING FROM PSYCHOLOGICAL OR EMOTIONAL ILLNESS; ASSESSING THE NEEDS OF MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC REQUIRING COUNSELLING OR PSYCHOTHERAPY AND MAKING SUCH REFERRALS AS ARE DEEMED APPROPRIATE; (3)UNDERTAKING RESEARCH INTO AND THE STUDY OF PSYCHOLOGICAL OR EMOTIONAL ILLNESS AND THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF PSYCHOTHERAPY AND COUNSELLING AND PUBLISHING THE USEFUL RESULTS OF SUCH RESEARCH AND STUDY; (4) TO DO ALL SUCH OTHER ACTS AND THINGS AS ARE OR MAY BE INCIDENTAL OR CONDUCIVE TO THE ATTAINMENT OF THE OBJECT OR ANCILLARY THERETO AND TO FORMULATE, PREPARE AND ESTABLISH SCHEMES THEREFORE PROVIDED THAT ALL THE ACTIVITIES OF THE CHARITY SHALL BE OF A CHARITABLE NATURE.
