Charitable expenditure
Some charities generate all, or a substantial part, of their income from investments which may have been donated to the charity as endowment or set aside by the charity from its own resources in the past. Such investments usually take the form of stocks and shares but may include other assets, such as property, that are capable of generating income and/or capital growth.
In managing their spending and investments charities need to strike a balance between the needs of future and current beneficiaries. They also need to take account of spending commitments that may stretch over a number of future years. To do this, charities will normally adopt an investment strategy designed to generate both income and capital growth. To maximise returns trustees may commit to investment strategies for several years.
Investments can experience large swings in value so trustees may, in a particular year, decide to realise and spend part of their charity’s capital or to invest part of its income.

These are assets, other than investments, which are held for more than 12 months and used to run and administer the charity such as buildings, offices, exhibits and fixtures and fittings.

Charitable objects
THE OBJECTS OF THE CHARITY ARE, FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT, TO: (A) ADVANCE THE CHRISTIAN FAITH IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE STATEMENT OF BELIEFS APPEARING IN THE SCHEDULE; (B) RELIEVE PERSONS WHO ARE IN CONDITIONS OF NEED OR HARDSHIP OR WHO ARE AGED OR SICK AND TO RELIEVE THE DISTRESS CAUSED THEREBY; (C) PROMOTE SOCIAL INCLUSION BY PREVENTING PEOPLE FROM BECOMING SOCIALLY EXCLUDED, RELIEVING THE NEEDS OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO ARE SOCIALLY EXCLUDED AND ASSISTING THEM TO INTEGRATE INTO SOCIETY (AND FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS CLAUSE “SOCIALLY EXCLUDED” MEANS BEING EXCLUDED FROM SOCIETY, OR PART OF SOCIETY, AS A RESULT OF BEING A MEMBER OF A SOCIALLY AND/OR ECONOMICALLY DEPRIVED COMMUNITY); (D) ADVANCE EDUCATION BY SUCH MEANS AS THE TRUSTEES MAY CONSIDER APPROPRIATE INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, THE PROVISION OF LIFE SKILLS TRAINING FOR REFUGEES AND OTHERS, AND PARTNERING WITH OTHER EDUCATIONAL PROVIDERS TO HOST THEIR DISTANCE LEARNING FACILITIES; (E) PROMOTE AND FULFIL SUCH OTHER CHARITABLE PURPOSES AS THE TRUSTEES MAY FROM TIME TO TIME THINK FIT, IN EACH CASE (I) DIRECTLY AND/OR IN PARTNERSHIP WITH OTHER PEOPLE AND ORGANISATIONS WITH SIMILAR AIMS; (II) IN SUCH PARTS OF THE UNITED KINGDOM OR THE WORLD AS THE TRUSTEES MAY FROM TIME TO TIME THINK FIT; AND (III) IN A MANNER THAT SHALL BE CONSISTENT WITH THE DOCTRINAL DISTINCTIVES AND ETHICAL STATEMENTS AS MAY BE ADOPTED AND AMENDED BY THE CHARITY FROM TIME TO TIME. THE TRUSTEES SHALL NOT DO ANYTHING, OR AUTHORISE ANYTHING TO BE DONE, IN FURTHERANCE OF THE CHARITABLE PURPOSES SET OUT IN ARTICLES 2.1(B), (C), (D) AND (E) ABOVE THAT WOULD CONFLICT WITH THE CHARITABLE PURPOSE SET OUT IN ARTICLE 2.1(A) ABOVE.
