Khandel Light was founded by Dr Peter Gough in 2000 after a visit to India. The charity works with Nirman Sanstha NGO in Khandel, Rajasthan, India to help the poorest families in this and surrounding villages with relief from drought, poverty, sickness, illiteracy and distress. In addition it helps to promote advancement in education and health education in this region of rural deprivation.

IN KHANDEL AND ITS SURROUNDING VILLAGES IN RAJASTHAN INDIA ("THE AREA OF BENEFIT") TO SUPPORT HEALTH EDUCATION NEEDS TO ENCOURAGE THE LONG TERM VIABILITY OF THESE VILLAGES AS PLACES TO LIVE WORK AND EDUCATE THEIR FAMILIES TO ENCOURAGE THE EDUCATION OF ALL CHILDREN AND RAISE THE STATUS OF WOMEN IN THE COMMUNITY AND TO HELP THE BREAK CYCLE OF POVERTY AND MIGRATION TO CITIES BY ASSISTING IN THE PROVISION OF A VIABLE WORTHWHILE AND REWARDING LOCAL COMMUNITY
