Our mission is to promote research to improve the care and treatment of all patients with progressive illness and to make high-quality palliative care available to everyone who needs it: be it in hospice, hospital or home. There is no other charity specifically concerned with carrying out work to identify and promote best practice in palliative care.

Charitable expenditure
Some charities generate all, or a substantial part, of their income from investments which may have been donated to the charity as endowment or set aside by the charity from its own resources in the past. Such investments usually take the form of stocks and shares but may include other assets, such as property, that are capable of generating income and/or capital growth.
In managing their spending and investments charities need to strike a balance between the needs of future and current beneficiaries. They also need to take account of spending commitments that may stretch over a number of future years. To do this, charities will normally adopt an investment strategy designed to generate both income and capital growth. To maximise returns trustees may commit to investment strategies for several years.
Investments can experience large swings in value so trustees may, in a particular year, decide to realise and spend part of their charity’s capital or to invest part of its income.

TO INVESTIGATE, PROMOTE AND ADVANCE HIGH STANDARDS OF CLINICAL PRACTICE, RESEARCH AND EDUCATION IN PALLIATIVE CARE, IN PARTICULAR BY 1) ADVANCING STANDARDS OF HIGH QUALITY CARE FOR PATIENTS WITH PROGRESSIVE ILLNESS AND THEIR FAMILIES, WHEREVER THE PERSON IS CARED FOR; 2) CONDUCTING, SUPPORTING, FUNDING AND COMMISSIONING WORLD-CLASS RESEARCH IN EFFECTIVE, PERSON-CENTRED AND SPIRITUALLY SYMPATHETIC FORMS OF PALLIATIVE CARE, IN PARTICULAR, PERFECTING RELEVANT AND ROBUST METHODS TO SET AN INTERNATIONAL GOLD STANDARD OF PALLIATIVE CARE RESEARCH 3) INVESTIGATING AND PROMOTING HIGH QUALITY CARE FOR PATIENTS WITH CANCER AND NON-CANCER PROGRESSIVE ILLNESS AND FROM SECTIONS OF SOCIETY WHICH MISS OUT ON THE BEST IN PALLIATIVE CARE; 4) PROVIDING POST-GRADUATE AND UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION FOR DOCTORS, NURSES AND OTHER PROFESSIONALS IN THE FIELD;AND 5) PROMOTING PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF PALLIATIVE CARE AND THE AVAILABLE TREATMENTS AND SERVICES AND INFLUENCING PRACTICE NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY ON CARE TOWARDS THE END OF LIFE
