Charitable expenditure
Some charities generate all, or a substantial part, of their income from investments which may have been donated to the charity as endowment or set aside by the charity from its own resources in the past. Such investments usually take the form of stocks and shares but may include other assets, such as property, that are capable of generating income and/or capital growth.
In managing their spending and investments charities need to strike a balance between the needs of future and current beneficiaries. They also need to take account of spending commitments that may stretch over a number of future years. To do this, charities will normally adopt an investment strategy designed to generate both income and capital growth. To maximise returns trustees may commit to investment strategies for several years.
Investments can experience large swings in value so trustees may, in a particular year, decide to realise and spend part of their charity’s capital or to invest part of its income.

Charitable objects
1. THE ASHLEY HOUSE HOSTEL INCLUDING ANY BUILDINGS HEREAFTER TO BE ERECTED THEREON SHALL BE HELD FOR THE PURPOSES OF MAINTAINING AN APPROVED HOSTEL APPROVED HOME APPROVED SCHOOL OR OTHER INSTITUTION APPROVED FOR RECEIVING SUPERVISING EDUCATING AND OTHERWISE PROVIDING FOR ANY ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING CLASSES OF PERSONS NAMELY:- ANY PERSONS NOT EXCEEDING THE AGE OF TWENTY YEARS IN RESPECT OF WHOM ANY PETTY SESSIONAL OR JUVENILE COURT SHALL HAVE MADE AN APPROPRIATE ORDER UNDER THE PROBATION OF OFFENDERS ACT 1907 AS AMENDED BY THE CHILDREN AND' YOUNG PERSONS ACT 1933 UNDER THE SAID CHILDREN AND YOUNG PERSONS ACT 1933 OR UNDER THE EDUCATION ACT 1921 OR .THE STATUTES FOR THE TIME BEING REPLACING RE-ENACTING OR EXTENDING THE SAME AND FOR SUCH OTHER PERSONS NOT EXCEEDING THE AGE OF TWENTY YEARS WHO ARE IN THE OPINION OF THE TRUSTEES IN NEED OF CARE PROTECTION AND SUPERVISION AFFORDED BY THE ASHLEY HOUSE HOSTEL BY REASON OF THEIR ENVIRONMENT OR CIRCUMSTANCES AND FOR SUCH OTHER PURPOSES ANCILLARY TO THE PURPOSES HEREINBEFORE DESCRIBED, INCLUDING THE PROVISION AND EQUIPMENT OF SUCH RECREATION ROOMS (INCLUDING A GYMNASIUM) AND CLUBS (IF ANY) AS IN.THE OPINION OF THE TRUSTEES SHALL BE NECESSARY OR DESIRABLE TO FURTHER SUCH PURPOSES AS AFORESAID IN EXERCISE OF THE POWER GIVEN TO THEM BY CLAUSE 10 (11) OF THE DECLARATION THE TRUSTEES DECLARE FOR ALL PURPOSESES OF THE DECLARATION THAT CLAUSE 1 OF THE DECLARATION IS HEREBY VARIED SO THAT THE CLASSSES OF PERSONS SPECIFIED THEREIN SHALL INCLUDE ALL OR ANY PERSONS REFERRED TO ASHLEY HOUSE HOSTEL UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACT 2000 OR ANY LEGISLATION OR ORDER REPLACING OR AMENDING THE SAME.
