Activities - how the charity spends its money
The Locomotion Trust was founded in 1975 to build and manage a full working replica of George Stephenson's first railway engine Locomotion No 1. The engine resides at The Beamish Open Air Museum. The Trust is commited to the spread of knowledge in early railways andhas since added two further engines Steam Elephant and Thomas Hedley's Puffing Billy all of which can be seen in operation at Beamish.

TO ADVANCE THE EDUCATION OF THE PUBLIC WITH REGARD TO RAILAYS IN PARTICULAR BY (BUT WITHOUT PREJUDICE TO THE GENERALITY OF THE FOREGOING) THE CONSTRUCTION F A FULL-SCALE WORKING REPLICA OF THE FIRST RAILWAY ENGINE TO PROVIDE A SERVICE FOR PASSENGERS NAMELY, STOCKTON AND DARLINGTON NO.1 "LOCOMOTION" AND THE MAINTENANCE AND PERMANENT DISPLAY AND DEMONSTRATION OF THE SAID REPLICA FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PUBLIC AS AN ITEM OF HISTORICAL TECHNICAL AND GENERAL INTEREST AND EDUCATIONAL VALUE.
