Charitable objects
The objects of the CIO are to relieve those in need for the public benefit, in particular, but not exclusively by: a) Providing access to justice and other services to people in detention, formerly in detention, and those who are liable to be detained in England and Wales, and who are unable to access legal aid; b) Providing legal representation as an all-round comprehensive community-based service to those in need and those without the financial means to do so for themselves, or due to government imposed restrictions; c) Providing legal advice and assistance to vulnerable individuals; d) Researching (publishing the useful results for the benefit of the public), advocating and campaigning (where to do so furthers the CIO’s exclusively charitable purpose) for better treatment and conditions of those in detention; and e) Providing training to aspiring legal aid practitioners in order that they may be better prepared to work for the benefit of the CIO’s beneficiaries in their future careers.
