Some charities generate all, or a substantial part, of their income from investments which may have been donated to the charity as endowment or set aside by the charity from its own resources in the past. Such investments usually take the form of stocks and shares but may include other assets, such as property, that are capable of generating income and/or capital growth.
In managing their spending and investments charities need to strike a balance between the needs of future and current beneficiaries. They also need to take account of spending commitments that may stretch over a number of future years. To do this, charities will normally adopt an investment strategy designed to generate both income and capital growth. To maximise returns trustees may commit to investment strategies for several years.
Investments can experience large swings in value so trustees may, in a particular year, decide to realise and spend part of their charity’s capital or to invest part of its income.

Charitable objects
TO THE INTENT THAT THEY SHALL BE EXCLUSIVELY CHARITABLE UNDER THE LAWS OF ENGLAND AND WALES THE CHARITABLE PURPOSES OF THE CHARITY (THE 'OBJECTS') ARE TO PROMOTE AND ADVANCE FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT IN ANY PART OF THE WORLD: (I) THE ADVANCEMENT OF EDUCATION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE (ALL OF WHICH OBJECTS SHALL TOGETHER BE DESCRIBED IN THIS CLAUSE 3 AS THE 'ADVANCEMENT OF EDUCATION'); (II) THE ADVANCEMENT OF HEALTH (ALL OF WHICH OBJECTS SHALL TOGETHER BE DESCRIBED IN THIS CLAUSE 3 AS THE 'ADVANCEMENT OF HEALTH'); (III) THE CONSERVATION, PROTECTION AND IMPROVEMENT OF THE PHYSICAL AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENT INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE CONSERVATION AND CLEANING OF THE OCEANS (ALL OF WHICH OBJECTS SHALL TOGETHER BE DESCRIBED IN THIS CLAUSE 3 AS THE 'PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT'); (IV) THE RELIEF OF THOSE IN NEED BY REASON OF AGE, YOUTH, FINANCIAL HARDSHIP, DISABILITY OR OTHER DISADVANTAGE (ALL OF WHICH OBJECTS SHALL TOGETHER BE DESCRIBED IN THIS CLAUSE 3 AS THE 'RELIEF OF THOSE IN NEED'); (V) THE ADVANCEMENT OF SUCH OTHER PURPOSES THAT ARE EXCLUSIVELY CHARITABLE ACCORDING TO THE LAW OF ENGLAND AND WALES AS THE TRUSTEES IN THEIR ABSOLUTE DISCRETION THINK FIT. THE CHARITY MAY ACHIEVE ANY OF THE OBJECTS IN PARTICULAR BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY BY: (I) BY PROVIDING FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO OTHER EDUCATIONAL CHARITIES, AND MEANS-TESTED BURSARIES TO INDIVIDUALS AND ALL THE NECESSARY SUPPORT DESIGNED TO PROVIDE SKILLS AND ADVANCEMENT IN LIFE . (II) AWARDING SCHOLARSHIPS, GRANTS, GENERAL OPERATING SUPPORT OR MAINTENANCE ALLOWANCES, ITEMS AND SERVICES TO: - INDIVIDUALS IN NEED AND/OR CHARITIES AND/OR - OTHER ORGANISATIONS WHICH HAVE AS THEIR PRIMARY AIM THE ADVANCEMENT OF EDUCATION AND/OR THE ADVANCEMENT OF HEALTH AND/OR THE PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND/OR THE EDUCATION OF THE PUBLIC IN THESE MATTERS.
