Charitable expenditure
Some charities generate all, or a substantial part, of their income from investments which may have been donated to the charity as endowment or set aside by the charity from its own resources in the past. Such investments usually take the form of stocks and shares but may include other assets, such as property, that are capable of generating income and/or capital growth.
In managing their spending and investments charities need to strike a balance between the needs of future and current beneficiaries. They also need to take account of spending commitments that may stretch over a number of future years. To do this, charities will normally adopt an investment strategy designed to generate both income and capital growth. To maximise returns trustees may commit to investment strategies for several years.
Investments can experience large swings in value so trustees may, in a particular year, decide to realise and spend part of their charity’s capital or to invest part of its income.

Charitable objects
THE OBJECTS ARE, FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT, 1) THE PROVISION AND MAINTENANCE OF SOCIAL HOUSING IN THE FORM OF ALMSHOUSES FOR THE BENEFIT OF PERSONS WHO ARE IN NEED OR FINANCIAL HARDSHIP AND WHO (EXCEPT IN SPECIAL CASES TO BE APPROVED BY THE CHARITY COMMISSION) ARE INHABITANTS OF THE AREA OF BENEFIT AT THE TIME OF THEIR APPOINTMENT. 2) SUCH CHARITABLE PURPOSES FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE RESIDENTS IN THE ALMSHOUSES OR ANY OF THEM AND IN SUCH MANNER AS THE CHARITY TRUSTEES THINK FIT FROM TIME TO TIME. 3) THE RELIEF OF THOSE IN NEED BY REASON OF FINANCIAL HARDSHIP, AGE, ILL-HEALTH, DISABILITY, YOUTH, SOCIAL EXCLUSION OR OTHER DISADVANTAGE, AND RESIDENT IN, WORKING IN, OR WITH A DEMONSTRABLE CONNECTION TO THE AREA OF BENEFIT, INCLUDING, BUT WITHOUT LIMITATION, BY THE PROVISION OF FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE (INCLUDING FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE WITH THE COST OF ACCOMMODATION APPROPRIATE TO THE NEEDS OF BENEFICIARIES), AND PROVIDING SUPPORT WITH EDUCATIONAL AND TRAINING FACILITIES AND SERVICES (INCLUDING SOCIAL AND PHYSICAL TRAINING). 4) FOR THE PROVISION AND SUPPORT (WITH THE OBJECT OF IMPROVING THE CONDITIONS OF LIFE FOR THE INHABITANTS OF THE AREA OF BENEFIT IN THE INTERESTS OF SOCIAL WELFARE) OF FACILITIES FOR RECREATION OR OTHER LEISURE-TIME OCCUPATION. 5) SUCH OTHER CHARITABLE PURPOSES FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE INHABITANTS OF THE AREA OF BENEFIT AS THE TRUSTEES SHALL FROM TIME TO TIME DETERMINE. THE 'AREA OF BENEFIT' SHALL MEAN THE AREA OF THE ANCIENT PARISH OF WALTON-ON-THAMES AND, SUBJECT THERETO, ELSEWHERE IN THE BOROUGH OF ELMBRIDGE.
