The charity will support a small number of programmes aimed at making significant breakthroughs that open up new areas of research, change existing practice within a scientific field, or transform how a health problem is addressed.

Charitable objects
THE OBJECT OF THE CHARITY IS TO PROTECT, PRESERVE AND ADVANCE HUMAN HEALTH AND WELFARE FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT THROUGH THE PROMOTION OF RESEARCH WHICH: 1 FURTHERS KNOWLEDGE AND EDUCATION IN THE BIOSCIENCES; AND 2 HAS THE POTENTIAL TO DELIVER SIGNIFICANT ADVANCES IN HUMAN HEALTH AND WELFARE, AND TO PUBLISH OR OTHERWISE DISSEMINATE THE USEFUL RESULTS OF SUCH RESEARCH. IN PROMOTING RESEARCH, THE CHARITY: 1 SHALL AIM TO SIGNIFICANTLY ADD TO SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE; AND 2 MAY ACCEPT A HEIGHTENED RISK THAT RESEARCH WITH THE POTENTIAL TO DELIVER SIGNIFICANT ADVANCES IN HUMAN HEALTH AND WELFARE MAY NOT ACHIEVE ITS ORIGINAL OBJECTIVE. BIOSCIENCES MEANS THE SCIENCES THAT DEAL WITH HUMAN BEINGS OR ANIMAL OR PLANT LIFE; ANY ALLIED SUBJECT; AND ANY SUBJECT OR SUBJECTS THAT HAVE OR AT ANY TIME MAY DEVELOP AN IMPORTANCE FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH THAT MAY CONDUCE TO THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE PHYSICAL OR MENTAL CONDITIONS OF HUMAN BEINGS OR ANIMAL OR PLANT LIFE. BIOSCIENCES INCLUDES MEDICINE, SURGERY, BACTERIOLOGY, BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, EPIDEMIOLOGY, THE ENVIRONMENT, GENOMICS, IMMUNOLOGY, MATERIA MEDICA, NEUROSCIENCES, PHARMACOLOGY, PHARMACY, PHYSIOLOGY, PSYCHIATRY, THERAPEUTICS AND VIROLOGY; AND RESEARCH INCLUDES BASIC, STRATEGIC AND APPLIED RESEARCH.
