Some charities generate all, or a substantial part, of their income from investments which may have been donated to the charity as endowment or set aside by the charity from its own resources in the past. Such investments usually take the form of stocks and shares but may include other assets, such as property, that are capable of generating income and/or capital growth.
In managing their spending and investments charities need to strike a balance between the needs of future and current beneficiaries. They also need to take account of spending commitments that may stretch over a number of future years. To do this, charities will normally adopt an investment strategy designed to generate both income and capital growth. To maximise returns trustees may commit to investment strategies for several years.
Investments can experience large swings in value so trustees may, in a particular year, decide to realise and spend part of their charity’s capital or to invest part of its income.

Charitable objects
4.1 THE ONLY OBJECTS FOR WHICH THE CHARITY IS ESTABLISHED ARE, FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT AND PRIMARILY (ALTHOUGH NOT EXCLUSIVELY) WITHIN THE PRINCIPAL AREA OF BENEFIT: 4.1.1 THE PREVENTION AND RELIEF OF POVERTY, AND THE RELIEF OF THOSE IN NEED DUE TO FINANCIAL HARDSHIP, ILL-HEALTH, DISABILITY OR OTHER DISADVANTAGE INCLUDING THROUGH THE PROVISION OF ADVICE AND SUPPORT FOR THE OPTIMISATION OF LIVING CONDITIONS, PARTICULARLY RELATING TO THE USE OF ENERGY AND RESOURCES AMONG THOSE IN NECESSITOUS CIRCUMSTANCES, INCLUDING THOSE IN FUEL-POOR HOUSEHOLDS, OR WHO HAVE SUFFERED LOSS THROUGH WEATHER-RELATED OR OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL EVENTS; 4.1.2 THE MAINTENANCE, IMPROVEMENT OR PROVISION OF PUBLIC AMENITIES FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT IN AREAS WHICH ARE SOCIALLY AND ECONOMICALLY DEPRIVED; 4.1.3 THE PRESERVATION, CONSERVATION, PROTECTION AND IMPROVEMENT OF THE ENVIRONMENT INCLUDING THROUGH SUPPORTING SUSTAINABILITY AND THE PRUDENT AND EFFICIENT USE OF RESOURCES; AND 4.1.4 THE ADVANCEMENT OF EDUCATION THROUGH THE PROVISION AND SUPPORT OF EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT AND TRAINING ABOUT ALL ASPECTS OF EFFICIENT AND SUSTAINABLE USE OF ENERGY AND RESOURCES.
