THE OBJECT OF THE CIO IS THE RELIEF OF SICKNESS AND THE PROMOTION OF PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH AMONGST PEOPLE IN THE LAST YEARS OF LIFE AND THEIR FAMILIES AND CARERS THROUGH EDUCATION OF THE PUBLIC IN GENERAL (PARTICULARLY AMONGST THE WORKFORCE RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING CARE FOR PEOPLE IN THE LAST YEARS OF LIFE) ON THE SUBJECT OF CARE FOR PEOPLE IN THE LAST YEARS OF LIFE, INCLUDING BY PROVIDING TRAINING TO ENABLE THE DELIVERY OF IMPROVED AND APPROPRIATE CARE FOR PEOPLE IN THE LAST YEARS OF LIFE. FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS CLAUSE “PEOPLE IN THE LAST YEARS OF LIFE” MEANS PEOPLE WHO ARE LIKELY TO DIE WITHIN THE NEXT 12 MONTHS OR WHO ARE LIVING WITH ANY LIFE-LIMITING OR DEBILITATING CONDITION WHO MAY BE IN THE FINAL PHASE OF THEIR LIFE.
