Charitable objects
THE OBJECT OF THE CIO IS: TO ADVANCE THE EDUCATION OF THE PUBLIC, INCLUDING SCIENTIFIC AND MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS, IN THE SUBJECTS OF GEROSCIENCE AND OF THE PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF SICKNESS ASSOCIATED WITH AGEING; IN PARTICULAR BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY BY: (A) MAKING GRANTS FOR AND SUPPORTING SCIENTIFIC AND MEDICAL RESEARCH AND LEARNING ON THOSE SUBJECTS, AND PUBLISHING THE USEFUL RESULTS; AND (B) SPONSORING RESEARCH CONFERENCES, SYMPOSIA, AND SIMILAR EVENTS ON THOSE SUBJECTS, EITHER GENERALLY OR THROUGH SUPPORTING THE INVOLVEMENT OF INDIVIDUALS WHO WOULD OTHERWISE LACK THE FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO PARTICIPATE. “GEROSCIENCE” REFERS TO THE STUDY OF THE GENETIC, MOLECULAR, AND CELLULAR MECHANISMS THAT RELATE THE BIOLOGICAL PROCESS OF AGEING TO THE CHRONIC CONDITIONS AND DISEASES PREVALENT IN OLDER PEOPLE. FOR A FULLER DISCUSSION, SEE KENNEDY BK, ET AL. “GEROSCIENCE: LINKING AGING TO CHRONIC DISEASE.” CELL 2014;159(4):709-713. FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS CLAUSE, “SICKNESS ASSOCIATED WITH AGEING” INCLUDES SYMPTOMS OF THE AGEING-ASSOCIATED DECLINE IN INTRINSIC CAPACITY, AS WELL AS CONDITIONS CAUSED BY BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES WHICH PERSISTENTLY LEAD TO THE LOSS OF ORGANISMS’ ADAPTATION AND PROGRESS IN OLDER AGES. THESE DEFINITIONS CORRESPOND TO THE CODES MG2A AND XT9T IN THE INTERNATIONAL CLASSIFICATION OF DISEASES 11TH REVISION (ICD-11) AND INCORPORATE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, SPECIFIC AGE-RELATED CONDITIONS AND DISEASES ALSO CURRENTLY CODIFIED THEREIN.
