Charitable objects
2.1 THE OBJECTS OF THE CIO ARE, FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT, THE ADVANCEMENT OF EDUCATION IN RELATION TO THE STUDY AND APPRECIATION OF THE HISTORY AND HERITAGE OF MANKIND BY: (A) ASSISTING IN THE WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT OF THE MIDDLE EAST IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM OR ANY DEPARTMENT SET UP IN SUCCESSION THERETO (THE ?DEPARTMENT?) IN RELATION TO THE ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS OF MESOPOTAMIA AND ELSEWHERE IN THE NEAR AND MIDDLE EAST AND THE FURTHERANCE OF KNOWLEDGE, UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATION OF SUCH CIVILIZATIONS WHETHER BY MEANS OF RESEARCH, ARCHAEOLOGY, THE EXHIBITION OF ARTEFACTS, OR SUCH OTHER CHARITABLE UNDERTAKINGS AS THE TRUSTEES SHALL THINK FIT; (B) ASSISTING IN THE WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT IN RELATION TO THE RECEPTION OF SUCH KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING AS THE SAME HAS EMERGED IN RELATION TO THE ANCIENT PAST OF THE EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN AND THE MIDDLE EAST GENERALLY; OR (C) SUCH OTHER MEANS AS THE TRUSTEES SHALL THINK FIT; BUT SO THAT NOTHING IN THIS CONSTITUTION SHALL AUTHORISE AN APPLICATION OF THE PROPERTY OF THE CIO FOR PURPOSES WHICH ARE NOT CHARITABLE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE LAW OF ENGLAND AND WALES. 2.2 WITHOUT PREJUDICE TO THE GENERALITY OF THE FOREGOING THE CIO SHALL HAVE PARTICULAR REGARD TO THE POSSIBILITY OF PROVIDING FUNDS FOR THE PURPOSE OF THE APPOINTMENT OF A CURATOR OF RECEPTION OF THE ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS OF THE NEAR AND MIDDLE EAST (INCLUDING EGYPT) AS AN ADDITIONAL MEMBER OF THE STAFF OF THE DEPARTMENT.
