TO STIMULATE AN INTEREST IN HISTORY, ESPECIALLY LOCAL HISTORY, BY SUITABLE MEANS, SUCH AS LECTURES, EXHIBITIONS, VISITS, EXCAVATIONS AND PUBLICATIONS. TO PROMOTE THE ADVANCEMENT OF EDUCATION AND RESEARCH INTO THE HISTORY OF THE AREA. TO RECORD AND ENCOURAGE THE PRESERVATION OF BUILDINGS, MONUMENTS, DOCUMENTS AND OTHER EVIDENCE RELATING TO THE HISTORY OF THE AREA.
