Some charities generate all, or a substantial part, of their income from investments which may have been donated to the charity as endowment or set aside by the charity from its own resources in the past. Such investments usually take the form of stocks and shares but may include other assets, such as property, that are capable of generating income and/or capital growth.
In managing their spending and investments charities need to strike a balance between the needs of future and current beneficiaries. They also need to take account of spending commitments that may stretch over a number of future years. To do this, charities will normally adopt an investment strategy designed to generate both income and capital growth. To maximise returns trustees may commit to investment strategies for several years.
Investments can experience large swings in value so trustees may, in a particular year, decide to realise and spend part of their charity’s capital or to invest part of its income.

Charitable objects
3.1.1 TO ASSIST IN FURTHERING THE OBJECTS OF CHRIST'S HOSPITAL AND OTHER SCHOOLS IN THE FACILITIES FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING FOR PERSONAL AND TEAMWORK DEVELOPMENT AND AS A NATURAL COUNTERPART TO THE EDUCATION OF THE MIND TO ENCOURAGE A MORE ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN COMMUNITY LIFE, INCLUDING SWIMMING, GYMNASTICS, ATHLETIC AND OTHER TEAM SPORTS 3.1.2 TO PROMOTE PHYSICAL HEALTH AND FITNESS FOR ALL BY PROVIDING WATER-BASED AND OTHER PHYSICAL TRAINING, THERAPEUTIC AND HEALTH-RECOVERY FACILITIES, INCLUDING SPORTS THERAPY AND INJURY TREATMENT FACILITIES, FOR USE BY INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS AND COMMUNITY ORGANISATIONS IN THE LOCALITY OR ELSEWHERE IN THIS COUNTRY OR OVERSEAS IN CONNECTION WITH THE PROVISION OF EDUCATION GENERALLY OR OF PHYSICAL TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT IN CASES OF INFIRMITY, INCAPACITY OR OTHER SPECIAL NEEDS SUBJECT TO THE FOREGOING TO PROVIDE SPORTING AND RECREATIONAL FACILITIES TO BE AVAILABLE TO THE MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC AT LARGE IN THE INTERESTS OF SOCIAL WELFARE
