Southwell Civic Society was formed in the 1971 to resist growing pressure to radically alter the town. The Society is now an independent, non-political, voluntary charitable incorporated organisation which works to protect the local environment. Membership is open to all.

(3) TO PROMOTE THE CONSERVATION, PRESERVATION, PROTECTION, DEVELOPMENT AND ENHANCEMENT OF FEATURES OF HISTORIC, ARCHAEOLOGICAL, CULTURAL OR PUBLIC INTEREST IN THE AREA OF BENEFIT. (4) TO ADVANCE THE EDUCATION OF THE PUBLIC IN THE ARCHITECTURE, ARCHAEOLOGY, NATURAL HISTORY, HISTORY, CULTURE AND GEOGRAPHY OF THE AREA OF BENEFIT.
