THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF STUDY AND RESEARCH IN FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS IN SCOTLAND AND NORTHERN ENGLAND BY INVITING DISTINGUISHED MATHEMATICIANS TO GIVE LECTURES AT EDINBURGH, NEWCASTLE AND, EXCEPTIONALLY, ELSEWHERE, AND ENABLING FOREIGN MATHEMATICIANS TO VISIT THE PARTICIPATING UNIVERSITIES.
